FAQ
-
A downwinder is a point-to-point foiling journey where you ride with the wind and swell from one location to another — typically along a coastline. Instead of paddling back to where you started, a support vehicle meets you at the finish. Downwinders are one of the most exhilarating ways to experience hydrofoiling: pure speed, natural energy, and miles of open ocean. They're the heart of what we do at Slack Tide.
-
Our adventures are designed for riders who can already foil independently and comfortably. If you're just starting out, we'd recommend booking a coaching session first to build your skills - then graduating to adventures once you're riding confidently. We'll always be honest with you about whether a particular adventure is the right match for your current level.
-
You'll need your own foil setup — board, mast, fuselage, and wing (for wing foiling adventures). If you don't yet have your own kit, speak to us about our gear shop or hire options before booking. We'll also tell you exactly what wetsuit thickness is appropriate for the time of year and location when you book.
-
All STFC adventures include a fully guided session with one of our experienced crew, safety cover and support vessel, shuttle logistics (where required for downwinders), and a debrief and social at the end. Some adventure tiers include accommodation and meals — check the individual adventure listing for full details of what's included.

Adventures are weather and tide dependent, so we run a rolling booking system with a short lead time. Most adventures are confirmed 5–7 days in advance once we've assessed the forecast. We recommend getting on our list early and we'll reach out when the right conditions align. Some premium expedition adventures require advance booking — check individual listings for details.
-
You should be a reasonably active person comfortable in the ocean. Adventures can be physically demanding depending on conditions and duration — a standard downwinder typically lasts 1–3 hours on the water. If you have any health concerns or physical limitations, get in touch before booking and we'll find the right option for you.

We monitor forecasts obsessively — it's kind of our thing. If conditions on your adventure day are unsafe or unsuitable, we'll reschedule with as much notice as possible at no extra cost. We never put the crew in the water if it's not right. The ocean sets the agenda, not the calendar.
