How To Fly

Theory & First Contact
From £195

Learn to fly. It's exactly as good as it sounds.

Experience the thrill of riding an electric hydrofoil in a private 1-on-1 lesson designed for all skill levels. This 2-hour session includes 90 minutes of water time, giving you plenty of opportunity to learn how to safely control and glide above the water using the latest electric hydrofoil technology.

What we cover:

  • Theory — how an efoil actually works, what makes the board lift, and what to expect when it does
  • Safety — how to handle yourself and the equipment out on the water, so you're confident before you ever hit the throttle
  • Equipment — a full rundown of the board, foil, and remote so nothing feels unfamiliar when you're out there

Your instructor will be with you every step of the way, reading your progress and adjusting the session to match your pace. By the end, you'll have felt your first flights in flat, controlled water - and we'll know exactly what you need to work on next.

This lesson is a prerequisite for Lesson 2 - it's how we get to know you as a rider and make sure you're ready to progress safely.

Theory Adaptation

This is where foiling starts to feel like yours.

Your second two hours build directly on everything from Lesson 1. The focus shifts from simply getting up on foil to feeling genuinely comfortable up there — smoother, more in control, and starting to move the board with intention rather than just hanging on.

What we cover:

  • Rail-to-rail carving — learning to shift your weight from edge to edge and guide the board through turns without losing height or confidence
  • Controlled S-turns — linking left and right carves together so your riding starts to flow rather than feeling like a series of separate moments
  • Pumping out of turns — using the momentum of each carve to generate speed and keep yourself flying, reducing your reliance on the throttle

Your instructor will build on what they already know about you from Lesson 1, pushing you further where you're ready and ironing out any habits that could hold you back later.

Prerequisites: Lesson 1 must be completed before booking this session.

Get Up and Pump!

Control & Direction

Less motor. More you.

By Lesson 3 you've got the foundations locked in — now we start pushing what you can do with them. You're still on the efoil, but the session is dialled up. We'll swap out your setup for a more progressive configuration — a more agile front & back wing that rewards precise weight shifts over leaning on power.

What we cover:

  • Wing and mast progression — understanding why equipment changes matter and how a different setup opens up new possibilities in your riding
  • Reducing motor reliance — learning to generate and maintain flight through weight shifts and early pump mechanics rather than throttle
  • Open water riding — where conditions allow, we'll find some open water swell so you start to get a feel for how foiling changes near moving water — a taste of what's coming in later lessons
  • Reading foil feedback — the new setup is more responsive, so we work on feeling what the foil is telling you and reacting naturally rather than overcorrecting

Prerequisites: Lessons 1 and 2 must be completed before booking.

Small Swell Session

Advanced Water

This is what it's all been building towards.

Lesson 4 brings everything together and takes it somewhere new — Woolacombe Beach. You'll make the transition from efoil to your first prone foiling session on a Flitelab board, a refined prone setup with a built-in jet assist to help you into waves while you're finding your feet in real ocean conditions.

What we cover:

  • Getting to know the Flitelab — how the board feels underfoot compared to the efoil, how the built-in jet assist works, and how to use it to get into waves cleanly without fighting the ocean
  • Reading swell — learning to spot and position yourself for the right waves, understanding how energy moves through the water and where to be when it arrives
  • Assisted take-offs — using the jet to bridge the gap between paddling power and foil flight, getting you onto clean swell lines and building confidence in a real surf environment
  • Unpowered gliding — once you're up, the jet steps back. This is your first taste of true unassisted foiling —linking with the energy of the wave and going where it takes you

Prerequisites: Lessons 1, 2 and 3 must be completed before booking.

The Double Dip Attempt

Full Water Session + Coaching

Lesson 5 — The Double Dip

There's a milestone in foiling that changes everything — the first time you pump off one wave, glide across the flat, and connect onto the next one without ever touching the water. That's the double dip, and Lesson 5 is built around getting you there.

What we cover:

  • Wave linking — learning to look ahead while you're riding, spotting the next wave early and positioning yourself to connect rather than kick out and paddle back
  • Timing and anticipation — reading how sets move through the lineup, understanding when to pump hard and when to let the foil breathe, and developing the instinct that separates intermediate riders from advanced ones
  • The double dip — putting it all together. Your instructor will be reading the ocean alongside you, calling the moments and coaching you through until it clicks

This is where foiling stops being a series of lessons and becomes a lifestyle. Once you've connected two waves, you'll understand why people never stop chasing this feeling.

Prerequisites: Lessons 1 through 4 must be completed before booking.

FAQ

  • The 5-stage Foil Intensive course is our flagship structured coaching programme. Over five sessions you progress from your first controlled flights on an efoil through to riding real ocean swell unassisted. Each stage builds directly on the last, and you finish the programme with a Slack Tide Foil Club completion certificate.

  • No — you can complete the stages across multiple visits or spread them over a season. The programme is designed to fit around you. That said, we recommend keeping the gap between sessions as short as practically possible so the skills stay fresh in your muscle memory.

  • The early stages use an efoil which removes the complexity of wind and waves and lets you focus purely on the feeling of flight in flat water. From stage four you transition to a Flitelab board which assists your paddle into a wave, gradually reducing motor assistance until you're riding on natural swell power alone. All equipment is provided — you don't need to bring anything except yourself and a wetsuit.

  • No experience is required. The programme is designed for complete beginners and takes you through everything from scratch. If you've had a lesson or two before, we'll assess your current level and place you at the right stage rather than making you repeat what you already know.

  • Each stage is priced individually at £195, making the full five-stage programme £975. All equipment, impact vests, and helmets are included. Transport to the location and meals are not included. If you book the full programme upfront the course is discounted to £875!

  • The programme runs from Crow Point in North Devon. Sessions are scheduled based on conditions — flat water stages are held at Crow Point and ocean swell stages are held on Woolacombe beach when conditions are safe. We'll always brief you at least 48 hours in advance on timing and exact location.

  • Everyone progresses at a different pace and that's completely fine. If you need more time on a particular stage, we'll carry it over to your next session rather than rushing you through. The goal is genuine progression, not ticking boxes. Not everyone can progress through all 5 stages in 5 days. This course is built to test your limits.

  • Every rider who completes all five stages earns a Slack Tide Foil Club certificate of completion. It's our way of marking a genuine milestone in your foiling journey. It won't get you a job - but it will impress your mates.
