Why We Ride
Menai
The Menai Strait is an 18-mile channel of tidal water separating Anglesey from mainland North Wales. It's one of the most hydrologically interesting stretches of water in the UK — tides run fast here, the water is clean, and the views across to Snowdonia make it one of the most dramatic places you'll ever ride.
For foiling, the Strait offers something genuinely unusual: consistent tidal flow that creates perfect conditions for downwinders without needing a big swell or strong wind to fill in. When the tide is running, the water organises itself into smooth, glassy runs that let you pump and link waves in a way that's hard to find anywhere else. Riders who get addicted to downwinding often cite the Menai as the place that started it.
The sheltered nature of the Strait also makes it an excellent learning environment — you get real moving water without the unpredictability of the open ocean. It's why we based our North Wales operation here. Every session in Menai feels different depending on the tide, the wind, and the conditions on the day. That variety is what keeps our instructors here.

We launch from a few different access points along the Strait depending on the tide, the session type, and wind direction — most commonly from the Menai Bridge or Beaumaris side. We'll confirm the exact meeting point with a what3words location when you book. There's easy roadside access and parking at all our launch spots.

The tidal flow. The Strait runs fast — up to 8 knots at peak spring tides — and that moving water organises itself into rideable energy even without swell or strong wind. For downwinders especially, it creates conditions that are genuinely rare: smooth, fast water that rewards good pumping technique and lets you link runs in a way that open water rarely does. It's also staggeringly beautiful, with Snowdonia as the backdrop on clear days.

Yes — the sheltered nature of the Strait makes it an excellent beginner environment. You're learning on real moving water without the unpredictability of ocean swell. We choose our launch spots and timing based on your level, so beginners always get conditions that are appropriate and safe. We would not put a first-timer in the water at peak tidal flow.

Yes — our Menai downwinder sessions are designed for riders who can already foil independently and comfortably. If you're new to foiling, start with a coaching session first and we'll tell you honestly when you're ready to progress to downwinder conditions. The tidal flow rewards good technique and is less forgiving than flat water for someone still finding their feet.

The Menai Strait is accessible from the A55 North Wales coast road — Menai Bridge is about 10 minutes from Bangor and directly crossed by the A5. From the M56/M53 it's roughly 90 minutes. The nearest train station is Bangor, from where we can arrange a pickup point. Anglesey and the Strait are well signposted once you're on the A55.
